Dictionaries for Yomitan

Good news: Hungarian is one of Yomitan’s officially supported languages, and a solid free HU→EN dictionary already exists.

The dictionary to get: kty-hu-en

The yomidevs wiktionary-to-yomitan project (formerly kaikki-to-yomitan) converts Wiktionary data into Yomitan dictionaries — including Hungarian→English, built from the English Wiktionary’s unusually rich Hungarian entries.

1. In Yomitan settings → General, set the language to Hungarian (hu).

2. Go to the wiktionary-to-yomitan downloads page and find the Hungarian→English dictionary (kty-hu-en).

3. Import it — either download the .zip and drag it into Yomitan’s dictionary settings, or paste the file URL into Import from URLs directly.

4. Optional extras from the same project: the Hungarian IPA dictionary (pronunciation transcriptions on every popup).

Deinflection: supported, imperfect

Yomitan ships language transforms for Hungarian, so many suffixed forms resolve to their stems out of the box. The official caveat applies: support depth varies by language, and Hungarian’s agglutination is a hard case — expect some inflected forms (long suffix chains, some coverb combinations) to miss.

When a lookup misses:

1. Trim suffixes yourself and scan the shorter form — after the case chapters, you’ll know what to strip.
2. Wiktionary in a side tab settles anything — its inflection tables are complete.
3. Coverb forms: remember the coverb may be split off elsewhere in the sentence — reunite them mentally (…eszem meg → megeszik) before looking up.
