Anki for Hungarian
Anki is your retention engine: it makes sure that words you meet once don’t need to be met twenty times by accident.
-
Install Anki from apps.ankiweb.net (desktop — the mobile apps sync to it).
-
Enable FSRS in deck options (Anki ≥ 23.10: Deck options → FSRS toggle). FSRS schedules dramatically better than the legacy algorithm — fewer reviews for the same retention. Set desired retention to 0.9 to start.
-
Create one deck:
Hungarian. Resist sub-deck sprawl. -
Set a new-cards/day limit you can sustain forever (10–15 to start). Reviews compound; ambition on day 1 is debt on day 60.
Card philosophy
Section titled “Card philosophy”- Sentence cards over isolated words: Hungarian morphology only makes sense in context.
- One card = one target. If a card tests two things, it fails as two cards.
- Delete/suspend liberally. A card that annoys you is a card that kills the habit.
Common mistakes
Section titled “Common mistakes”- Grinding conjugation tables into cards — acquire forms from input instead.
- 50 new cards/day in week one — the review avalanche arrives in week three.
- Ignoring “leeches” — if a card fails 8+ times, rewrite it or delete it.
- Studying cards instead of immersing — Anki is the supplement, not the meal.
