A free beginner→A1 web course — no ads, no signups, no paywalls. Small but genuinely free, with charming extras (Eszperente!).
Free guides & courses
Web courses
Section titled “Web courses”The US Foreign Service Institute’s public-domain course. Ancient and dry, but thorough drilling with audio — also floating around YouTube as playlists.
Grammar, reading, and listening comprehension exercises with detailed footnotes — by Szita Szilvia (of MagyarOK). The community’s most-recommended practice site, by a distance.
The MagyarOK textbook’s official free online exercises — usable standalone too.
B1–C1 exercise and vocabulary packages — one of very few intermediate+ practice sources anywhere.
Listening activities and quizzes for beginners and intermediates, teacher-made.
Grammar references & PDFs
Section titled “Grammar references & PDFs”A long-standing English-language grammar reference. Handy as a second opinion next to our grammar guide — community wisdom says read it with mild caution on details.
The MagyarOK textbook series publishes its grammar summaries as free PDFs (see the site’s docs/downloads) — concise, teacher-written, English available for the early volumes.
Free grammar-note PDFs accompanying the Lépésenként course materials.
Textbooks & classroom courses
Section titled “Textbooks & classroom courses”Legally free or worth paying for — in that order:
The modern standard textbook series (A1→B2), with lots of free companion material (grammar PDFs, exercises, corpus). If you buy one textbook, buy this one.
Every textbook used in Hungarian public schools, downloadable free as PDFs. Not for learners — which is exactly why it’s gold at B2+: real school materials on every subject.
The classic intensive summer school in Debrecen (also online courses) — the in-person immersion option. ELTE, Szeged, and Pécs run summer courses too.
Classic paper textbooks worth knowing by name: Halló, itt Magyarország! (the long-serving beginner course), Teach Yourself Complete Hungarian, and Colloquial Hungarian — all paid, all findable in bookshops.
Learner blogs & archives
Section titled “Learner blogs & archives”A long-running blog of bite-size Hungarian lessons, idioms, and vocabulary posts — great casual reading between study blocks.
A community archive rescuing the best posts from the old Duolingo Hungarian forum — years of learner Q&A that would otherwise be lost.
A companion archive to Magyar Bagoly with overlapping (sometimes better-organized) articles.
Long-running grammar-explanation blog with a deep archive of clear posts on specific constructions.
Category seeded from the Learn Hungarian ≈ Danuvia Discord community’s resource archive — köszönjük!
