Dative & possession
The dative case
Section titled “The dative case”The accusative marks the direct object; the dative marks the indirect object — whoever something is done to/for. The suffix is -nak/-nek by harmony, and annak/ennek is the dative of that/this.
- Adtam egy könyvet a fiúnak. — I gave a book to the boy.
- Virágokat veszek Hajninak. — I’m buying flowers for Hajni.
- Kinek írsz levelet? — Who are you writing a letter to?
- Hála Istennek! — Thank God! (lit. gratitude to God)
Pronouns:
| Pronoun | Dative |
|---|---|
| én | nekem |
| te | neked |
| ő | neki |
| mi | nekünk |
| ti | nektek |
| ők | nekik |
Úgy tűnik nekem, hogy ő szerelmes beléd.
It seems to me that he/she is in love with you.
Possession
Section titled “Possession”There is no possessive pronoun structure like English my/your doing the work — the possessive is a suffix on the possessed noun:
| Pronoun | Single possession | Multiple possessions |
|---|---|---|
| én | -am, -em, -om, -öm, -m | -aim, -eim, -jaim, -jeim, -im |
| te | -ad, -ed, -od, -öd, -d | -aid, -eid, -jaid, -jeid, -id |
| ő | -a, -e, -ja, -je | -ai, -ei, -jai, -jei, -i |
| mi | -nk, -unk, -ünk | -aink, -eink, -jaink, -jeink, -ink |
| ti | -atok, -etek, -otok, -ötök, -tok, -tek, -tök | -aitok, -eitek, -itok, -itek |
| ők | -uk, -ük, -juk, -jük | -aik, -eik, -jaik, -jeik |
Milyen napod volt?
nap-od → day-your
How was your day?
A kutyáim szomorúak, mert nincs több kajájuk.
My dogs are sad because they have no more food.
Things to note:
- Possessions usually take the definite article: a kutyám.
- Multiple possessions ≈ single +
-i— so the regular plural-kis not used with possessives. - Some nouns change stem: idő → ideje.
- There’s no rule for when the
-j-variants appear — input settles it. - The accusative
-tmay be dropped when a possessive is the direct object (Látom a kutyám), at the price of occasional ambiguity: A kutyám üldözi a macskám — either animal could be chasing the other.
Dative for the possessor
Section titled “Dative for the possessor”Adding the dative to the possessor stresses ownership, and it’s required in chains and with demonstratives:
- A barátom macskájának tálja. — My friend’s cat’s bowl.
- Ennek semmi értelme. — This makes no sense. (lit. this has no sense)
- A falnak is füle van! — Even the walls have ears!
- Annak a mókusnak a makkja. — That squirrel’s acorn. (vs.
Az a mókus makkja— that is the squirrel’s acorn)
Stating possession — Hungarian’s “to have”
Section titled “Stating possession — Hungarian’s “to have””There is no verb to have. Existence (van/vannak) plus a possessive suffix does the job; nincs/sincs negates it:
Van egy macskám.
is one cat-my
I have a cat.
- Persze, hogy vannak barátaim! — Of course I have friends!
- Egyszer volt egy madaram. — I once had a bird.
- Nincs kedved moziba jönni? — Do you feel like coming to the movies?

Mine, yours — pronouns and -é
Section titled “Mine, yours — pronouns and -é”Pronouns can precede possessed nouns for emphasis (az én könyvem, a te könyved, az ő könyvük), and standalone possessive pronouns exist:
| Pronoun | Single | Multiple |
|---|---|---|
| én | az enyém | az enyéim |
| te | a tiéd | a tiéid |
| ő | az övé | az övéi |
| mi | a miénk | a miéink |
| ti | a tiétek | a tiéitek |
| ők | az övék | az övéik |
- Ez a toll az enyém. — This pen is mine.
Unattributed belonging without pronouns takes bare -é:
- Bátyámé volt. — It was my brother’s.
- Ez a tányér Marcié, tegnap este itt hagyta. — This plate is Marci’s, he left it here last evening.
Postpositions with pronouns
Section titled “Postpositions with pronouns”Spatial postpositions and abstract ones take the possessive endings when used with pronouns:
| Pronoun | helyett (instead of) | miatt (due to) | szerint (according to) |
|---|---|---|---|
| én | helyettem | miattam | szerintem |
| te | helyetted | miattad | szerinted |
| ő | helyette | miatta | szerinte |
| mi | helyettünk | miattunk | szerintünk |
| ti | helyettetek | miattatok | szerintetek |
| ők | helyettük | miattuk | szerintük |
- Szerinte ez a legviccesebb dolog, amit valaha látott. — According to him, this is the funniest thing he’s ever seen.
- Azt akarod, hogy én vigyem ki helyetted? — Do you want me to carry it out instead of you?
