Word order & focus
You’ll hear that Hungarian has “free” word order. It doesn’t — it has meaningful word order. The grammar of who did what is carried by suffixes, which frees word order to carry something else: information structure. Change the order and every version is grammatical — but each answers a different question.
The skeleton

- Focus — the slot immediately before the verb; the new/emphasized information, the answer to the implicit question
- After the verb — background details
One sentence, four emphases
Section titled “One sentence, four emphases”Take Anna látta Pétert a moziban (Anna saw Péter at the cinema):
Anna látta Pétert a moziban.
Anna saw Péter at the cinema. (neutral-ish; Anna is topic)
Anna Pétert látta a moziban.
It was PÉTER whom Anna saw at the cinema. (not someone else)
Anna a moziban látta Pétert.
It was AT THE CINEMA that Anna saw Péter. (not elsewhere)
Pétert Anna látta a moziban.
As for Péter — it was ANNA who saw him. (Péter topicalized, Anna focused)
The focused element answers the question you’d naturally ask:
- Kit látott Anna a moziban? → Anna Pétert látta.
- Hol látta Anna Pétert? → Anna a moziban látta.
Question words live in focus
Section titled “Question words live in focus”This is why question words always sit right before the verb — a question is a focus request:
- Mit csinálsz? — What are you doing?
- Hova mész? — Where are you going?
- Miért sírsz? — Why are you crying?
And the natural answer puts the new information in exactly the same slot.
Verb focus
Section titled “Verb focus”With nothing else in the focus slot, the verb itself carries the newsworthy weight — this is the neutral statement-of-event:
Esik az eső.
It's raining.
Megjött a busz.
The bus has arrived.
How to acquire this
Section titled “How to acquire this”Don’t compute it — listen for it. Focus carries the sentence stress in speech: the focused word gets the beat. Pay attention to which word natives hit hardest, notice it sits before the verb, and the pattern installs itself. When your own sentences start putting the answer-word before the verb without thinking, it’s acquired.
