The Magyar Starter deck

Magyar Starter is this project’s beginner deck: the most frequent Hungarian words as sentence cards, ordered by our frequency dictionary, with short example sentences built (as far as possible) from words you’ve already met — so the deck teaches itself in order.

Current release: v0.1 — 300 words (the top of the frequency list, curated). Growing toward 1,000+ in batches.

  1. Download magyar-starter-deck.apkg from GitHub releases.

  2. Double-click it (or Anki → File → Import). One deck appears: Magyar Starter.

  3. Deck options: enable FSRS, set new cards/day to 10–15. Resist more.

Updates are safe to import over the old version — cards update in place, your review history stays.

Front: a short Hungarian sentence, target word highlighted. Back: the dictionary form, meaning, translation, and the word’s frequency rank.

Grade on the sentence: understood it + the target → pass.

  • No audio yet — planned for a future release. Until then, Forvo covers pronunciation checks, and the alphabet chapter means you can already read everything aloud yourself.
  • Sentences were written for this deck and reviewed, but if anything sounds off to a native ear, an issue takes one minute — corrections regenerate the deck in one script run (scripts/deck/).
  • 10,000 Hungarian sentences (easiest→hardest): first 3,000 · remaining 7,000 — machine-assisted translations, imperfect but a huge listening/reading gym.
  • MagyarOK vocabulary: A1+ · A2+ — companion decks to the textbook series.
  • Harry Potter ch. 1, HU audiobook (deck): sentence audio on the front, text on the back — a clever listening drill format.

(Community-made decks from the Danuvia Discord’s archive; quality varies, AnkiWeb links occasionally rot — report dead ones.)

  • This deck is a launchpad, not a lifestyle: around the time you finish it, sentence mining from your own immersion should be taking over.
