Word building

Hungarian is agglutinative: suffixes solve most of its problems, including making new words from old ones.

Verbs become nouns with -ás/-és:

tanul (studies) → tanulás (learning)

Compound words

Base word + base word, no glue needed:

autó + pálya (path) → autópálya — motorway
számító (calculating) + gép (machine) → számítógép — computer
irány (direction) + tű (needle) → iránytű — compass
ablak + deszka (board) → ablakdeszka — windowsill

The famous long word

Megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért — “for your [repeated] behaving as if undesecratable” — built one legal step at a time:

szent (holy) → szentség (sanctity) → szentségtelen (unholy) → szentségtelenít (desecrates) → +het (can) → +etlen (cannot-be) → +ség (ness) → +es (esque) → +kedés (behaving) → +eitek (your, plural) → +ért (for) → meg- (telic).

Nobody says this. Everybody enjoys that it’s possible.
