Yomitan for Hungarian

Yomitan is a browser pop-up dictionary: hover a word, get an instant definition. It’s the single biggest reading-friction remover in the toolchain.

  1. Install the Yomitan extension for your browser (Chrome/Edge/Firefox — search “Yomitan” in your extension store).

  2. Open Yomitan settings → Dictionaries → import a Hungarian dictionary file (.zip in Yomitan’s dictionary format).

  3. Set the scan key (default Shift + hover) and test on any Hungarian news site.

Yomitan grew up around Japanese, so Hungarian support has two gaps — and closing them is this project’s flagship goal:

  1. Dictionaries. There is no polished, freely packaged HU→EN Yomitan dictionary comparable to JMdict. We are building one from Wiktionary data — releases will appear on our GitHub.
  2. Deinflection. Hungarian is agglutinative: házamban needs to resolve to ház, elmentem to elmegy/megy. This requires Hungarian language-transform rules in Yomitan. Also on our roadmap — contributions very welcome.

Until then: pair Yomitan with an online dictionary in a side tab, and lean on the fact that Hungarian spelling is regular enough that stems become guessable fast.
