Locatives: the where system

Hungarian distinguishes where you are, where you’re going, and where you’re coming from — systematically, everywhere.

Where?	Close	Far
Hova? — where to?	ide — to here	oda — to there

Honnan? — where from?	innen — from here	onnan — from there

(hová is an alternative form of hova.)

Én mindig úgy jutok el oda, ahova tartok, hogy távolodom onnan, ahol voltam.

Nine locative cases cover location relative to nouns, in three groups by how the noun is interpreted — and a noun can be interpreted more than one way depending on context.

Hollow box — into / in / out of

For structures, rooms, vehicles — anything conceptually enterable.

Bemegyek a könyvtárba. — I’m going into the library.
A pingvin a sivatagban áll. — The penguin stands in the desert.

Abstract uses go far beyond physical space:

Fából készült. — It’s made out of wood.
Békében élünk. — We live in peace.
A való életben. — In real life.

Abstractly, -ra/-re shades into for and -ról/-ről into about:

Mire gondolsz? — What are you thinking about?
Számíthatsz rám! — You can count on me!
Napról napra. — From day to day.
Fotót készítettem egy madárról. — I took a photo of a bird.

Futottam a kutyához. — I ran to the dog.
Marcinál vagyok. — I’m at Marci’s.
Futok a szobortól. — I’m running (away) from the statue.

Abstract uses:

Sok sikert a tanuláshoz! — Good luck with your learning!
De félek a sötétségtől! — But I’m scared of the dark!
Attól függ. — It depends. (lit. it hangs from that)
