1–10, with the rhyme

0 = nulla. Tens: tíz, húsz, harminc, negyven, ötven, hatvan, hetven, nyolcvan, kilencven. Teens and twenties compound with a stem change: tizennyolc (18), huszonkét (22). Hundreds/thousands attach directly, no space: száz, háromezer, kétmillió.

Kettő shortens to két before nouns — but say the full kettő on the phone or across a noisy bar, because két and hét are one bad connection apart.

Remember from plurals: counted nouns stay singular — három ember, száz méter.

Hány vs. mennyi

Both ask how much/many: hány? for countables, mennyi? for uncountables (and loosely for countables too):

• Hány óra van? / Mennyi az idő? — What time is it?
• Mennyi bort ittál? — How much wine did you drink?
• Mennyibe kerül? — How much does it cost? (money = uncountable · but: hány forintba kerül?)

Answering Mióta tanulsz magyarul? (since when?) takes a possessive-marked time: Egy éve. — for a year.

Hányadik vs. hányas

Two different “which number” questions:

Telling time: minutes into the next hour

The system that trips up every visitor:

• Fél három — 2:30 (half of three — half way into hour three)
• Negyed hét — 6:15 (quarter into seven)
• Háromnegyed öt — 4:45 (three-quarters into five)

Round and offset times:

• Egy óra van. — 1:00 · Dél van. — noon · Éjfél van. — midnight
• Nyolc óra múlt öt perccel. — 8:05 (five past eight)
• Tíz óra lesz öt perc múlva. — 9:55 (five to ten)

Basic arithmetic

Formula: [number] [operation] [number] az [number]:

• Három meg nyolc az tizenegy. — Three plus eight is eleven.
• Tíz mínusz négy az hat. — Ten minus four is six.
• Ötször három az tizenöt. — Five times three is fifteen.
• Harminc osztva hárommal az tíz. — Thirty divided by three is ten.

And the idiom you now understand structurally: Nem oszt, nem szoroz. — It doesn’t matter. (lit. it neither divides nor multiplies)
