Comparative & superlative

Attach -bb for the comparative, wrap leg-…-bb for the superlative, and legesleg- to exaggerate:

• Te vagy a legnagyobb hős a világon! — You are the biggest hero in the world!
• A szomszéd fűje mindig zöldebb. — The neighbour’s grass is always greener.
• Ő a legeslegszebb lány számomra. — She’s the most beautiful girl of all, to me.

Some adjectives shorten when -bb attaches:

• szép → szebb · jó → jobb · kevés → kevesebb

így / úgy — this way / that way

Adverbial pronouns describing how a verb happens. Úgy refers to something said or referenced; így to the situation at hand:

• Úgy többet tanulok, ha elmagyarázod nekem. — I learn more (that way) if you explain it to me.
• Így jobb. — It’s better like this.
• Segítek neki, így gyorsabb lesz. — I’m helping him, it’ll be quicker this way.
• Ugyanúgy gondolkoznak, ahogy én. — They think the same way I do.

ilyen / olyan — this kind / that kind

The adjectival pair, modifying nouns instead:

• Nincs olyan messze. — It’s not that far.
• Olyan sok munkám van. — I have so much work.
• Ilyen az élet. — Such is life.
• Ilyen nincs! — That can’t be possible! (lit. there’s no such thing)
• Mi is ilyenek voltunk, amikor fiatalok voltunk. — We were like that too when we were young.

mint — than / as

With a comparative, mint = than:

Gyorsabb vagyok, mint egy golyó!

I'm faster than a bullet!

Jobb adni, mint kapni.

It is better to give than to receive.

The -nál/-nél case can replace mint:

De az acél nehezebb a tollnál!

But steel is heavier than feathers!

Ennél nincs szebb a világon.

There's nothing more beautiful in the world than this.

With olyan or úgy, mint = as / like:

• Ő olyan magas, mint én. — He/she is as tall as me.
• Úgy vezet, mint egy őrült. — He/she drives like a maniac.
• Úgy esik, mint a disznó! — It’s raining cats and dogs. (lit. it falls like the pig!)
