Likes & interests

Hungarian spreads English like/love across a whole spectrum of verbs — and they split into two grammatical camps:

Dative camp — the thing appeals to you: tetszik, ízlik (+ dative for the person)
Accusative camp — you like the thing: vonz, érdekel, kedvel, bír, szeret, imád (normal transitive verbs with definite/indefinite conjugation)

Tetszik — general liking

Something appeals to you; the person takes the dative and is often omitted. Casual synonym: bejön.

Sok embernek tetszik az új film.

many person-DAT appeals the new film

Many people like the new film.

Tetszik? Igen, tetszik.

Do you like it? Yes, I do.

Nekem tetszik Éva.

I have a crush on Éva.

Ízlik — taste

Same construction, food only:

Hogy ízlik?

How does it taste (to you)?

Ízlik a vörösbor.

I like red wine.

Érdekel — interest

It interests (me) — the interested person is the object:

Nem érdekel az iskola!

School doesn't interest me!

Érdekelnének a szálloda árai.

I'd be interested in the hotel's prices.

Vonz — attraction

It attracts/entices — transitive:

Az nem vonzana sok turistát. — That wouldn’t attract many tourists.
Ausztrália és Új-Zéland vonzanak engem. — Australia and New Zealand attract me.

Kedvel · bír — fondness, casual liking

Kedvel = to be fond of / fancy. Kedvellek is the brave-but-not-too-brave alternative to a full confession. Bír ≈ I dig it, without sounding like slang:

Nem kedvelem a horrorfilmeket. — I don’t care for horror films.
Bírom A Gyűrűk Ura filmeket. — I dig the Lord of the Rings films.
Tökre bírlak, de csak mint barát. — I totally like you — but just as a friend. (tökre = slang)

Szeret — like & love

The workhorse: loving people, liking things, and with an infinitive, liking activities:

Szeretem a lovakat.

I love horses.

Szeretek olvasni.

I like reading.

Szeretlek.

I love you.

Its conditional szeretnék (I would like) is the politeness essential from the conditional chapter.

Imád — adoration

One step above szeret for things; worship-grade for people:

Bogi imád mindent, ami szép. — Bogi adores everything that’s beautiful.
Imádtam focizni, ennek ellenére rosszul játszottam. — I loved playing football; I played badly nonetheless.

Szerelem — romantic love

The noun of being in love, reserved for partners. Falling in love = beleszeret (+ -ba/-be), the state = szerelmes:

Rómeó beleszeretett Júliába.

Romeo fell in love with Juliet.

Terms of endearment: drágám, édesem, kedvesem, szívem, szerelmem.
